Swarm is three hundred and fifty handmade polymer clay bees suspended from the ceiling with a frame. A pair of scissors waits on a plinth nearby. The viewer experiences the swarm as a unit at first – the individual bees are overshadowed by the group they exist within.

With the scissors presented, the viewer is then asked to choose a bee and cut it down, highlighting the destruction of collective identities through individual acts. The swarm is deconstructed by audience participation. What remains when the swarm is separated are individual polymer clay lumps shaped like bees, their collectivity and power having been made and destroyed by the individual. Did you get one?
